Sexual assault remains a very complex and complicated crime. In many cases, victims have difficulty proving your case and often comes down to the word of one against the other. For this reason, along with physical and mental abuse suffered such crimes as rape continue to go largely unreported.
The victim in these crimes are often too afraid to follow criminal charges. Almost all victims are women and almost all offenders are men. Often, the victim knows or is an acquaintance of infringer. The nonprofit organization Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) advises that it is important to remember that each state has different laws and legal definitions of rape and sexual assault, which may be somewhat different from those provided by the Department of Justice. Some important statistics to note about sexual assault / rape are:
- In 2006 there were 272,350 victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault under the 2006 National Crime Victimization Survey. These numbers do not include victims under 12.
- Every two minutes, somewhere in America someone is sexually assaulted.
- One in six American women are victims sexual assault, and one in 33 men.
- About 44 percent of rape victims are under 18, and 80 percent are under 30 years.
- In about two-thirds of all cases of rape, the victim knows the offender.
- The criminal profile of the rapists are usually very similar. According to a Justice Department report "Sex Crimes and criminals," there is a "striking similarity" between rapists: 99 in 100 are men, six in 10 are white, and the average age is early 30s.
- Sexual assault offenders were substantially more likely than any other category of offender who has experienced physical or sexual abuse while growing up.
- About 7 percent of the violations involved the use of a weapon, 2 percent used a firearm, 4 percent used a knife.
These statistics are very real, but there are certain behaviors to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of sexual assault.
