I recently had the results of my last panel of diabetes and within moments of checking results online, I received a call from my office of primary care physicians. It seemed my LDL cholesterol had increased significantly and I might add unusually so, up 75 points. I returned the call and a nurse took the phone and told me I needed to take an order for 80 mg simvastatin immediately. I assured the nurse that if she was to examine the results of whole blood lipids and my A1C (average blood lead levels of sugar in three months) it seems that the test was in error and we we just need to run another test. She answered back in the test could be wrong and I was in danger of having a heart attack! I went to say that 50% of people who have heart attacks LDL cholesterol level and the other 50% do not. She asked if I was ready to take that risk. I guess it was not math. Finally, in frustration said she would contact with my doctor.
I quickly received an email from my doctor that the prescription was ready to pick me up. He also added that even if I did not have diabetes, I would be in danger of having a heart attack. I held out throughout several days and several e-mails with my doctor who insisted the test results were not wrong, but then, if it would make me more comfortable with taking the medication he would order a new panel of lipids.
He did, I did and the new results, of course showed my LDL to 75 points lower the first test! Therefore, because of my blood lipids Panel, triglycerides, low levels of HDL cholesterol, LDL and reasonable, my risk of heart disease was actually very low. If I had listened to the propaganda of fear medical thrown my way, I been on a high dose of a drug that has been well documented to have many side effects, including damage muscle and heart attacks.
Why do I stay on my land? Because I am in charge! This is my body, my life and I make a point about diabetes and metabolic syndrome that accompanies it. Throughout the medical profession is taught to treat a symptom not a cause. In the impersonal world of medicine a test result comes back and if the number does not match "should be" graphic, medications are prescribed for that be. From my experience and never made to find the cause of the anomaly or treat side effects of prescription drugs. This type of treatment causes a predictable myriad of side effects and prescription medications that followed a downward spiral of bad health. This increase is never more evident than in the medical community standard treatment of diabetes.
So who's in charge? You are! Get informed, ask questions and do not be afraid to stand up for yourself. Choose health!
Bradley Kapture, author, “The Sounds of Silence” http://www.yoga4diabetes.com/pages/publications.html and lecturer, is the founder of yoga4diabetes™ Kapture is an expert in asana, mantra and meditation practices. In 2004 a turn in life circumstances forced him to close his yoga studios, leave his yoga practice and go to work in the world of corporate sales. After just 3 years he found himself overweight, filled with anxiety and with type 2 diabetes. He refused standard drug treatment and instead returned to yoga and developed a yoga method to address the causes of type 2 diabetes and to heal his body.
Within just three months his blood sugars had returned to normal levels. His doctor responded, “I agree with you on your diabetes control; the HGA1C is well below target at 6.5 so keep doing what you’re doing. It’s really a tremendous achievement to go from 7.7 to 6.5 in such a short time period without medication” These results inspired him to share his yoga method and help others with diabetes reduce or eliminate dependence on medication and help those with pre-diabetes from developing the disease.
