On May 22, 2007, five schoolgirls at Sacred Heart Girls College in suburban Melbourne, Australia, were transported to hospital after receiving an injection of Gardasil, the newest vaccine to be mandated for cancer of the cervix. Shortly after vaccination Twenty-six young girls were seen on the campus clinic. Five were admitted to hospital: two were kept overnight for dizziness; had temporary paralysis and loss of speech. The remaining two was unknown. (1)

In the U.S., symptoms similar to those faced by girls in Australia were reported to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS). Since the approval of the vaccine in June 2006, there were at least 1,600 adverse reactions reported. Here are few examples directly from the VAERS report pages:

"Immediately after injection the patient complains of severe pain at the site. Fell off table and fainted for approximately 10 to 15 seconds. Hyperventilation. Was complained of headaches, blurred vision, eye examination is normal. Vomiting x 1 in parking and speech was momentarily inarticulate. Sent to ER where his neurological examination was normal except for word recall "coffee instead of coughing" and said "generated instead of tired.

"A patient was vaccinated with a first dose of vaccine against HPV. Subsequently the patient leaves the examination room, the patient fainted. The patient recovered shortly after the disappearance. "

"A woman aged 14 was vaccinated with Gardasil. He been reported that the patient was sitting on a bench. When the nurse left the room, the patient apparently fainted and ended up falling bench. It was reported that he was unsure whether the patient had broken her nose but there was blood. At the time of this report, the sequence of events was unknown. "

VAERS is a passive surveillance system and depends on voluntary reporting by clinicians and parents of serious health problems after vaccination. Although VAERS reports do not prove causation, they can provide a warning system that a vaccine may be the cause of problems health.

It has been estimated that less than 10 percent, even as low as 1 to 4 per cent, side effects of medication prescription or a vaccine are ever reported (2). If only 1 percent of all adverse events associated with Gardasil are reported to VAERS, there could have been as many as 160,000 acute health problems of the vaccine within a year. The long-term neurological complications or immune system are completely unknown. It is not known if any of those children vaccinated then develop fertility problems, cancer or damage to their genes, all of which Merck admits in its product insert have not been studied.

John Iskander, the Center for Disease Control Safety Office of the vaccine said, "There is absolutely no reason to think that something of this vaccine that will make people more likely to faint. " (3) Despite his assurances, there are ingredients in the vaccine can cause recipients to become dizzy and weak.

Histidine, an amino acid, readily converts into another amino acid, histamine, when it enters the body. Once released, histamine causes redness, swelling, itching and allergic reactions leading to widening of capillaries, decrease in blood pressure … people can faint. The vaccine also contains Polysorbate 80, an agent used in creams, ointments, lotions, and multiple medical preparations including vitamin oils, and anticancer agents. Polysorbate 80 may cause potentially fatal reactions to including anaphylaxis, characterized by a sharp drop in blood pressure, hives and difficulty breathing … people can faint. (4)

Fainting spells after vaccination can have serious consequences. An article published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine (1997), reviewed the 697 reports of syncope (fainting) that occurred after vaccination and were reported to VAERS between 1990 and 1995. Over 97 percent of events occurred within 30 minutes of a vaccine, establishing a causal relationship. Of these, six patients have suffered severe head trauma, including a fractured skull, brain hemorrhage and brain contusion. Three of these patients required a brain surgery and two were left with substantial residual neurological deficits at six months to two years follow-up. (5) Dizziness and fainting after vaccination is not something to take lightly.

As for the children in Australia the vaccination program should be continued in June "The college is confident that this vaccination program is sure to offer students," says Christopher Dalton, the school principal. "We will work with the Department of Human Services Victoria and the City of Monash Immunization Services in the vaccination program planning.

The hypothesis is that sickness and dizziness are "normal reactions" to vaccines. The dominant theme for Australians is that "we have a vaccine, and we'll use it." For girls in the United States, close monitoring is recommended.
